History

Hickory Grove Church started on this journey in 1865.  After many years of worshipping in the back of Bethel Baptist Church, Rev. Sam Byrd along with twenty other members desired to have a congregation of their own.  Therefore on September 15, 1868 this group decided to step out on their own and start their own church.

Hickory Grove Church has had a history of pastors with longevity, having only 10 pastors in its 144 years of serving the Lord as a separate congregation.  Excluding the current Pastor, the church had only three Pastors that served less than ten years and two who served more than 20 years.

Over the years, the church and the old school continued to receive improvements. In January of 2009 the most recent addition was added to the church.  This addition was a new fellowship hall with all the modern conveniences. But on February 18, 2009 a storm came through Hancock County and completely destroyed the church building and the newly added fellowship hall. There was some damage to the school but the storm left it standing and we are now in the process of renovating the old school that also sits on the church site.

This school is one of the few old schools left in Hancock County that were once used by the “Colored” children to study from 1st to 12th grade.

Our church building is gone and we are worshiping in various locations until such time as we can rebuild. In spite of this setback, God is still blessing us individually and as a congregation. We are still serving the Lord, depending on him, and preparing and planning for the new things that we know God is going to do in our lives. For we know that with God all things are possible and in spite of our difficulties God is still in charge.
